Simple enough that you can do it remotely using videoconferencing software, the Decoupage Birdhouse has been a favorite craft project for our grandchildren. Make sure both grandma or grandpa (at one location) and the grandchild (at another location) each have access to the supplies. It’s no fun to watch someone else making a craft project!
We’re going to include instructions as if you will be doing this from separate locations, but if you happen to be in the same room, lucky you, that’s even better!
Here’s what you’ll need:
- A miniature wood birdhouse (available at most craft and department stores)
- White glue thinned with a little water or Mod Podge
- Coordinating scraps of colorful paper (torn pieces of scrapbook paper work great)
- A foam paintbrush
Making Your Decoupage Birdhouse Via Videoconference
- Set up your Zoom chat, your Microsoft Teams Chat, or your FaceTime call in advance. Make certain both you and your grandchild can work hands-free. We recommend you place your call from a laptop so you can aim the camera at your workspace and still communicate.
- Protect your table or work surface
- Start by tearing your scrapbook paper into 1-inch pieces. You’ll probably want to use something bright and colorful
- Show your grandchild how to paint just one surface of the birdhouse at a time with the thinned glue or Mod Podge, then attach pieces of paper, overlapping them to make sure that all of the wood is covered.
- Work on one side at a time, folding the paper when you get to an edge or trimming it evenly with the edge of the wood.
- Remember! This decoupage birdhouse is not about perfection. It’s about having fun together while you keep your hands busy and enjoy some conversation. The child on the other end of your call may need some adult assistance.
Once you are finished, show off your completed creation! Here’s a videochat screenshot of a 5-year-old’s finished birdhouse made without adult supervision on her side of the call. It took less than thirty minutes and her smile says she’s satisfied with the result!
