This simple and fun Snowman Video Call Playdate features some of the highlights from our Snow Crystals Playdatebox, but is trimmed down and simplified into a version you can enjoy remotely with a far-away grandchild. Sneezy is a hot-tubbing snowman who evokes all kinds of giggles from a preschooler. You’ll love this colorful Read-Aloud book. The companion hot-tubbing snowman activity is simple enough you can do it over the phone.
Assemble Your Snowman Playdate Supplies
This Mini Snowman Playdatebox is a small “care package” you can assemble and ship in advance so that it arrives in time for your Video Call Playdate. This one is perfect for that fun Sunday evening call with the grandkids. You can either ship all of the ingredients, or check with Mom and Dad first to see what they have on hand.
Our Mini Snowman Playdatebox Includes:
- A paperback copy of Sneezy the Snowman
- A supply of large marshmallows
- Stick pretzels
- Candy eyes
- A bag of fruit snacks
- A package of hot chocolate mix for each grandchild, or a tin of your favorite hot chocolate mix
- Optional: A fun and festive mug or sturdy paper cup for each phone call participant
- Optional: Fun paper straws in festive colors
We took the inspiration for this fun hot-tubbing snowman from the wideopeneats.com website and adapted it based on stuff we had hanging around in the pantry.
Snowman Assembly
Once you’ve scheduled your FaceTime or Zoom call, practice reading the book a couple of times, using a goofy voice when Sneezy is speaking. Pay close attention to the illustrations so that you can be sure to zoom in on the hilarious little Red Cardinals that appear on each page.
On the Day of Your Snowman Video Call…
The fun doubles when everyone can play along, so be sure you have snowman building supplies at your home in addition to the ones you mailed to your grandchildren. There’s no rule for how to assemble your snowperson. Maybe leaving that up to the creativity of the crowd will be part of the fun.
- We simply connected three large marshmallows together by pressing them onto pretzels.
- We added extra pretzels as arms and legs
- Poke a toothpick into the marshmallow where you want the eyes to go. This will expose some of the sticky marshmallow insides so the candy eyes will stick easily.
- Chocolate chips make great buttons, or even just dot on some melted chocolate. You can press in small candy sprinkles using the same toothpick method that worked for the eyes
- We snipped off a piece of orange fruit snack for a nose, but candy corn will also work.
Last but not least, warm up a mug of hot cocoa and let your snowman go for a swim while you read Sneezy the Snowman via Zoom or FaceTime. Note: you may want to assemble your marshmallow snowman and get him started melting in his tub of hot chocolate before you start reading the story. That way, you can sip cocoa as you enjoy the book together. Make sure you take lots of photos and share them with us on our Instagram page: @playdate_box.
